“Can I build my own business website?” Of course you can. However, while you do not need to be a genius, it will take some commitment from your side to make it successful.
Sure, there is a bit of a learning curve involved. Not as major as some people would like you to believe, though – but you will need to acquire a new set of skills. At the end of the day, though, those skills will be very valuable – since you can re-apply them whenever you want to. Even if you outsource your next website, you will still be able to keep tabs on the project, and prevent any one from feeding you rubbish (and make you pay for it).
Firstly, you need to understand how search engines work – in basic terms anyway. You need to have some understanding of how they will view your website, and how to make it attractive to them in order to ge some natural traffic from Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Next, there are some skills needed to actually build the website. Sure, you can just use any website builder software, but then you may be missing out on many of the advanced features that a content management system would bring to the table. While it is simple to say “I don’t need it”, the fact is that a content management system makes it a LOT easier to add stuff afterwards, as well as promote your website. But don’t stress – it’s not nearly as bad as it seems…..:)
Next, you need to know about the different ways you can use to promote your website – partly for additional visitors (search engines take a while before they start sending you visitors), and partly to improve your standing in the search engines (the more promotion you do for your site, the more they take note, and reward you for it. Of course, there are right and wrong ways of doing it, and some ways will be more effective than others.
Lastly, you need to be willing to commit yourself to grow and promote your website over time – ideally, you need to keep adding information to your website periodically. Doing so will allow you to get more and more search engine visitors, since your website will be including more and more possible search terms in its text as it grows.
